Chemistry through Fragrances

Sense of smell is used in the IGL programme. There are 10 basic fragrances that are mapped to the numerical 0-9 values and their infographs. Students will be expected to identify the 10 distinct fragrances and the numeric value they represent. These numeric values then go on to commuicate any idea. Students will grow to learn how fragrances are created and how the senses recognize them.

Sense of smell is a powerful layer in IGL
In the same way that sounds eventually create music. Fragrances in IGL are considered a students first introduction to chemistry. Smells are a very important layer in the IGL learning process. Layers build memory and creative thought as well as drawing in a part of the brain that is normally used for simply discerning olfactory variations to being applied to the capacity to process knowledge and information. Any idea or word will have the capacity of being communicated through the mapping of the 10 basic fragrances into numerics and phonetics that allows students to approach ideas from a unique position.

Sensory map

Its a known fact that different fragrances can trigger memories long forgotten about places visited or past events. The smell of freshly baked confectionery can take you back to your childhood, to a place you once visited or to a past experience. The sense of smell is therefore a very powerful layer for building memory. Students learn how to apply fragrances to the thought process, use these to process ideas and can apply this methodology to memory as well as numerous other creative applications in education all the way up to the actual molecular structure of different substances found in chemistry.

Learning to categorize fragrances allows IGL to apply them
in formal education as an important layer

For teachers, the ability to bring different fragrances into the classroom through various activities, make them the focus of discussion and enable students to harness the power of these fragrances in the cognitive process is first received as an enjoyable activity for students that will later have a powerful influence on their ability to learn, remember and enhance their intellectual ability.
